WebGL 1.0 Specification Released

At the Game Developers Conference in San Fransisco yesterday, the Khronos Group released the official royalty-free version 1.0 of the WebGL specs, alongside free tools to assist in the testing and development of WebGL applications.

WebGL is an open standard made to support 3D graphics directly inside of web browsers, without any plugins. All the browser needs is full HTML 5 support, while WebGL requires OpenGL ES 2.0 support in the hardware, a very widespread driver these days.

Important!

At the time of writing, Google Chrome 9.0 is the only browser that supports WebGL in a stable implementation. Firefox, Opera and Safari browsers should all be available with WebGL 1.0 support in their stable versions soon. In the meantime, currently available beta versions already implement support for WebGL.

In their official press release, Khronos tries to explain how WebGL works and why it should become the standard for 3D inside browsers: “WebGL defines a JavaScript binding to OpenGL® ES 2.0 to allow rich 3D graphics within a browser on any platform supporting the industry-standard OpenGL or OpenGL ES graphics APIs.”

Facebook Clear ALL Activity

I stumbled upon a great Greasemonkey script for clearing your Facebook wall of all posts, of any type. It seems to work very well, so I recommend it to anyone looking to do some cleaning up without having to press the same buttons over and over a thousand times.

Install Greasemonkey for Firefox, restart the browser, then install the Clear ALL Facebook Activity (fixed) script.

A button should appear on your profile page when installed (refresh may be needed).

I updated the original creator’s script to work in the new Facebook profiles.

EDIT 2012.14.2: The script needs to be revised for the new Facebook “Timeline” profiles. I have attempted to make it work, but without success thus far. I might try again at a later time, but for now I have decided to scratch the project.

There’s a lot of different tricks and tools that are supposed to improve website loading times in Firefox, but whether they really make a difference or not is often hard to tell.

There are exceptions however, so follow the directions below to make your pages display faster in Firefox as they are loading:

In the address bar (where you type in website addresses), type “about:config” and hit Enter to access the hidden settings menu in Firefox.
In the “Filter:” field, type “network.prefetch”.
Right click the line that says “network.prefecth-next” and click “Toggle”.
